Brian Bowman, former mayor and Pitblado partner, is once again taking on a new role. Bowman’s appointment to the Court of King’s Bench in Manitoba was announced by the Justice Department earlier today.

The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Arif Virani, expressed his confidence in Bowman’s abilities. “I am sure that Justice Bowman will excel in his new responsibilities. His service to the people of Manitoba as a member of His Majesty’s Court of King’s Bench for Manitoba will undoubtedly be commendable,” Virani stated in a press release.

Bowman’s legal career began with his admittance to the Manitoba Bar in 2000. He spent 14 years practicing privately, nine of those years being spent at Pitblado Law. He was a partner at our firm until 2014 when he became mayor. His practice focused on privacy, access to information, and social media law.

A significant figure in Winnipeg’s history, Bowman, who is Métis, was the city’s first Indigenous mayor. After being re-elected in 2018, Bowman completed his second term as mayor and chose not to seek a third term.

Bowman’s contributions extend beyond his professional life. He is a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal and the Manitoba Bar Association’s award for community involvement. His civic engagements include leadership roles with the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, and the University of Manitoba Alumni Association.

Moreover, Bowman has held chair positions with the Canadian Bar Association’s national privacy and access law section and the Manitoba Bar Association’s technology and intellectual property law section.

Congratulations, Brian Bowman!
