It is with great sadness that Pitblado Law announces the passing of our colleague and friend, Robert (Rob) Giesbrecht.
Rob joined the Firm in 1987, building a distinguished practice in Real Estate law. Over the course of his career, he became Head of the Firm’s Real Estate Practice Group and was widely recognized for his expertise, particularly in condominium development. Rob had the ability to guide clients through complex legal matters with patience, care, and practical advice, making even the most challenging processes feel seamless. He was a dedicated lawyer, a trusted advisor, and, to many clients, a long-time friend.
Rob was equally committed to mentoring the next generation of lawyers. He generously shared his knowledge and experience with junior colleagues, and many of our senior leaders remember him as a trusted sounding board who helped shape their early careers. In recent years, he often joked with clients and colleagues saying, “I’m semi-retired. I don’t work on Sundays anymore.”
Within the Firm, Rob was known for his kindness. He was the first to greet colleagues with a “good morning” and loved sharing stories about the latest theatrical productions he had seen over the weekend. Whether recommending a new movie or television series, discussing his latest recipe, or bringing homemade treats to the assistants outside his office, Rob found countless ways to brighten the days of those around him. His holiday baking, especially his famous shortbread, became a cherished favourite at the Firm’s annual potluck.
Rob also cared deeply about his community and the environment. He walked to work most days and proudly led the Firm’s Green Team, encouraging sustainable practices throughout the office. As a proud member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, Rob generously shared his experiences and perspective, helping foster a more welcoming, inclusive, and supportive workplace for everyone.
Outside of work, Rob was deeply devoted to his faith and his church community at First Mennonite Church. He had an exceptional singing voice and was a longtime member of the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir. His love of music extended to the Firm as well, whether it was classical music coming from his office or conducting the Partners during the occasional holiday jingle at our Pitblado Holiday Party.
Above all, Rob was devoted to those he loved. He was a proud fiancé, father, stepfather, and grandfather, and he spoke often of his family with great pride and affection.
Rob will be deeply missed by his colleagues, friends, clients, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Our heartfelt condolences are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
