It is with great sadness that Pitblado Law announces the passing of our colleague and friend, Yude Henteleff.

Yude was born in Winnipeg in 1927, to parents who came to Canada to start over as pioneers. His primary school education began in St. Vital, where he later attended the University of Manitoba, obtaining his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture before joining the Faculty of Law for his Bachelor of Laws in 1951.

At the beginning of his legal career, Yude began at Walsh Micay before moving on to Shinbane, Dorfman, Kanee, Henteleff. In 1965, he partnered with Harold Buchwald, followed by Izzy Asper in 1970, and Simkin Gallagher in 1993, forming Buchwald Asper Gallagher Henteleff. There, he focused on corporate and commercial law, estate planning, mediation and conciliation.

In 1998, Buchwald Asper Gallagher Henteleff merged with Pitblado & Hoskin, becoming Pitblado Buchwald Asper (later simplified to Pitblado in 2002), where Yude practiced as senior counsel until his retirement.

Yude was not only a passionate and eminent lawyer. His early exposure to human rights issues, activities with the Jewish community and his parent’s belief in “tikkun olam”, a Hebrew phrase meaning to repair the world, made him a strong social advocate.

Yude co-founded the Learning Disabilities Association of Manitoba and served as the Honorary Solicitor for the Learning Disabilities Association of Canada. He helped establish The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba and received a Certificate of Honour in 1976 for his leadership and contributions. His advocacy extended to special needs children, women, palliative care and Indigenous peoples, impacting communities in Canada and internationally in countries like Bolivia, Thailand, New Zealand, Colombia, and Israel.

Throughout his career, Yude received numerous accolades in recognition of his significant contributions, including being named a Member of the Order of Canada, receiving the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Manitoba, and the Distinguished Service Award from the Manitoba Bar Association.
