Established in 1997, Raising the Roof Chez Toit (“RTR”) is a charitable organization leading the way in long-term solutions to homelessness through their dedicated work in developing, owning and operating affordable housing.

RTR has successfully developed projects in Ontario and Newfoundland, and in 2022 started its first project here in Winnipeg, MB, with the purchase and renovation of a home on Mountain Avenue. The home, dubbed “Butterfly Lodge”, underwent a full renovation and now has three separate units with housing for 12 people.

In 2024, RTR purchased the property located at 480 Young Street (“480 Young”) to develop 23 units of affordable housing for up to 40 vulnerable persons. The project partners were Chandos Construction, Siloam Mission, and Main Street Project, with additional project financing from the Collaborate Housing Alliance and the Manitoba Housing Renewal Corporation, as well as project funding from the Winnipeg Foundation, TD Bank and several philanthropic partners.

Chandos, a certified B Corps contractor, acted as the General Contractor for 480 Young. As much of the work as possible was subcontracted to social enterprise contracting partners, including Build Inc., giving opportunity for hands-on trades training for Indigenous youth and others in need of support and connections to begin construction careers.

Now that the building renovations on 480 Young are complete, the additional housing units have increased Winnipeg’s total supply of supportive housing by 8%.

Main Street Project will now oversee resident placement and work with RTR to deliver on-site support services for residents, helping to ensure long-term housing stability and well-being.

Pitblado is proud to work with RTR as legal counsel in Manitoba; keep an eye out for future development within the city in years to come.

On behalf of the team at Pitblado Law, congratulations to Raising the Roof Chez Toit!!
